Leave from employment

Part-time leave without pay

If you take any form of LWOP on a part-time basis, you can continue to be treated as a full-time employee (in which case you must continue to make your contributions at the full-time rate), or you may elect to be treated as a part-time employee for the period of the leave. This option is available, irrespective of whether the part-time LWOP is ordinary LWOP (including extended leave), or prescribed LWOP, such as maternity leave.

Some members may choose this option to reduce the amount of their personal contributions to SSS. However, it is important to realise that a reduction in unit entitlement for periods of LWOP is permanent and will reduce the amount of the benefit you would otherwise receive.
